CRRI develops six high-yielding rice varieties
Business Line
The Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), Cuttack, has developed six high yielding varieties of rice for Orissa in a bid to increase the rice production in the State. The seed sub-committee, Bhubaneswar, recently released the rice varieties.

These included two hybrid rice varieties - Ajay and Rajlaxmi, two scented rice varieties - Geetanjali and Ketekijoha and two high yielding varieties - Naveen and Varshadhan.

CRRI Director, Mr S G Sharma said that while Naveen a high yielding variety is suitable for irrigated condition, Varshadhan is suitable for semi deep and deep-water condition.

Mr Sharma said that the aromatic variety Geetanjali is a mutant of Basmati 370 and Ketekijoha was developed by RARS, Titabar, Assam Agriculture University.

Ketekijoha was adopted for Orissa farmers after it was tested and evaluated by the CRRI scientists and found to be suitable for the climatic condition of the state.

While Geetanjali (CRM 2007-1) one of the two aromatic varieties developed by CRRI scientists yields up to 5 ton per hectare and gives higher economic returns to the farmers, Ketekijoha is suitable for rain-fed shallow low lands of Orissa and has a signif icant yield advantage over traditional aromatic cultivars. It yields 4 tons per hectare, he said.

The CRRI Director said Varshadhan, developed by the Institute could be a boon for low lying areas of Orissa where water stagnates up to 50-60 cm and would improve rice production in such areas, he said.

Naveen has been very popular with farmers during field-testing and is suitable for both Kharif and Rabi seasons. It yields four to six tons per hectare. It would do very well in uplands where irrigation facility is available, he said.

CRRI scientists identified and developed such varieties taking into consideration the limited availability of water, Mr Sharma said.

While hybrid Ajay has a yield potential of 10.5 ton per hectare, Rajalaxmi can yield up to 9.3 ton per hectare, he said.
