California Calrose rice returns to Fiji market
ONE of the most bought grain in the world is being sold in the country again after three decades.

Regarded as the world's best rice, Californian Calrose medium grain premium quality rice, is available again at stores around the country.

Punja and Sons Limited launched the American cereal at its head office in Lautoka yesterday.

They sell it only in 10kg bags which are available at leading supermarkets for $12.39.

Punja's managing director Nitin Punja, said they were excited to launch the California Calrose rice in Fiji and other Pacific island markets.

"Rice is the most widely consumed grain in the world," he said.

"It is also the foundation for glorious cuisine from around the world.

"Apart from that, it is the staple diet shared by many cultures around the world."

Mr Punja said the rice business was an original family business of theirs.

His father, down to him and his family, imported rice in bulk and polished it with the world renowned Satake rice milling equipment in an automated continuous process.

After the rice is polished, it is then graded with a high technology scanner and packed according to various sizes and weight and distributed to their markets in Fiji and around the region.

Mr Punja said their rice products or brands included Siam, Jasmine, Par Boiled and Basmati.

Californian Calrose rice is the latest addition.

"Calrose rice is grown only in a few parts of the world," he said.

"In terms of clean taste, Calrose rice is probably the best in the world," Mr Punja added.

When launching the rice, outgoing US Ambassador David Lyon said Californian rice was the best in the world.

"The rice was sold here in Fiji about 30 years ago by Punja and Sons but I think the US dollar factor and other things led to the search for other markets," he said. "California rice is the best in the world. "Today, it is exported to 20 countries around the world." Mr Lyon commended Punja and Sons for re-introducing Californian rice to Fiji and the Pacific. "It is my last day of work in Fiji and I have had a pleasant time here celebrating Punja's success story" he said. Mr Lyon said he felt good to be in the Western Division. He said it was because of the economic viability and good race relations he noticed in western people.
