Agri dep't projects rice production growth
MANILA -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Thursday projected a 14.75 million metric tons of rice harvest for 2005, surpassing the 14.49 MMT in 2004.

Outgoing Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the modest growth would be attained despite adverse problems this cropping season, particularly the El Nino phenomenon.

The DA initially pegged total rice production at 15.12 million metric tons (MMT) this year.

Recent developments however, point to a total production of 14.75 MMT, still up by 1.8 percent from last year's all time high of 14.49 MMT.

The modest growth despite El Niño and a host of problems that again beset the rice sector can be attributed to the use of organic fertilizer such as composting, to lessen the impact of increased fertilizer prices.

Yap further said the DA is intensifying coordination and collaboration with local government units and provides location-specific interventions such as the use of zinc sulfate to increase yield levels.

The DA is also promoting cost-reducing techniques such as the integrated pest management and Tipid Abono Balanced Fertilization Scheme.
