Thailand to host meeting of rice exporting countries
BANGKOK, July 15 (TNA) - Thailand will host an international meeting of rice producing and exporting countries next month, aimed at discussing cooperative approaches to boost rice prices on the world market.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatran said that the Thai government had invited rice producing and exporting countries to attend the meeting here in August.

The meeting was aimed at forging closer ties and cooperation among the world rice producing and exporting countries to boost the rice prices on the global market, he disclosed.

The government is expected to announce the date of the international conference soon.

The meeting is part of the government's attempts to boost the prices of Thai agricultural products.

The prime minister said that the Thai government had also successfully negotiated with the US and the European Union (EU) authorities to re-open their markets for Thai shrimp exports.

"Washington has promised to review its anti-dumpting measures against Thai shrimp exports, while the EU has also pledged to return its trade privilege under the generalised system of preference (GSP) to the same Thai products. I expect that we'll receive the good news from the two major markets in September", said Mr. Thaksin.

The Thai leader also urged Thai consumers to help local farmers by purchasing farm products, which would help solve the problem of over-supply and boost the prices of local agricultural products.
