Rice export target to be risen
The Ministry of Trade on July 9th started survey on agricultural production in seven provinces in the Cuu Long River Delta before making the final decision to increase the rice export target of this year over 3.8 million tons following the proposal by the Vietnam Food Association (Vietfood).
In the first half of this year, Vietnam exported 2.659 tons of rice, obtaining US$744 million, up by 10.5% with regard to volume and 35.4% in terms of value.
The volume of rice finalized in export contracts by enterprises has exceeded 3.8 million tons and this volume will be delivered in July and August. If domestic rice supply and demand are balanced, rice export target can be risen over 3.8 million tons.
The Vietfood thus has proposed the Government to adjust rice export target of this year. In the province of Long An, Deputy Minister of Trade Phan The Rue and Vietfood representative reaffirmed under the Government’s guidelines, rice export must benefit farmers and enterprises, consolidate the position of Vietnam’s rice in the world market as well as stabilize the domestic rice market. They further said after surveying, they would submit to the Government the most feasible plan for increase of rice export target.
Vietfood forecast says rice prices will rise drastically again in the end of July after dropping in the end of June and the beginning of July. At the moment, paddy rice prices in the Cuu Long River Delta is from VND1,900 to VND2,100 per kg, VND400 – 500 per kg lower than the beginning of June.
In July, Vietnamese rice exporters will compete to win export contracts with the Philippines when the country offers an import of 300,000 tons. In June, Vietnam won a bid to export 300,000 tons of rice (25% broken grade) at US$284 per ton to this country.
South Korea and Iraq will offer bids for import of respectively 350,000 – 400,000 and 150,000 tons of rice. African rice importers will also be back in the end of July. Export of rice thus will surge, pushing up rice prices in the domestic market.
