Russia new hopes for grain exports
Russia is hoping that the European Union will lift the one million ton quota imposed on Russian agricultural imports as the drought in Spain may produce considerable grain shortages. Russia’s agriculture minister, told RIA Novosti: "There will be a grain deficit and they [the European Union authorities] will have to make the market more liberal."

He added that Russia had the potential to export up to nine million tons of grain next year, with four million tons making their way to European markets.

However, Michael Mann, the European Commission spokesman for agriculture and rural development, quoted by Lloyds List, said: "We have a huge glut of grain in the EU at the moment with close to 17 million tons of grain in intervention stocks. We are trying to manage our own stocks and so it is unlikely that we will be importing any grain. There is a drought in Spain and there is a lack of grain in certain regions, but we are making arrangements to transport half a million tons of cereals from intervention stocks. We are accepting bids from July 14 until the middle of September and will make our decisions based on the offers we receive. The grain will probably come from either Hungary, Slovakia or Germany."

Russian agricultural producers just like their colleagues from other sectors of the economy are suffering from various trade barriers imposed on the way of their production. Russia hopes that after it joins the World Trade Organization, it will be able to demand fairer treatment for its producers.
