EU Pleased with Bush’s Comments to Eliminate Farm Subsidies
The European Commission has welcomed the willingness shown by President Bush (see yesterday’s Daily) to eliminate U.S. agricultural subsidies. Bush earlier told a television audience he was prepared to abandon farm subsidies if the European Union (EU) did as well.
As reported in today’s Informa Economics Policy Report, EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said the EU had previously pledged to phase out all export subsidies. The Commission says it hopes the president’s words “will be translated into genuine and far-reaching reforms which can find their way through Congress when the U.S. farm bill is up for revision in 2007.”
Former Bush administration Deputy Secretary of Defense and World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz said in an interview with the Associated Press in advance of this week’s G-8 summit that phasing out agricultural subsidies in rich nations would be an important part of tackling poverty in the world’s poorest nations. The president’s statements may indicate the type of farm bill proposals that will come from his administration later this year.
