Cuba Develops Rice Project with Vietnamese Cooperation
Havana, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is developing a popular rice growing program with the participation of Vietnamese specialists in the introduction of advanced technology.

Agriculture Ministry sources said the program is in motion in Bartolome Maso, Granma province, and La Sierpe, in Central Cuba, so far yielding 4.7 tonnes per unit. The system will extend to 17 municipalities in eastern Cuba.

Coordinator Thang Le Manh said the program consists of using grown seedlings, instead of the traditional transplant method, and this has raised productivity.

A spontaneous growers´movement, grouped in the National Popular Movement of Rice Producers, managed to fill the rice deficit on the Island through intensive exploitation of small plots using sustainable technologies, and increasing manual work.

In that way cultivation by transplant was introduced, with the selection of the most adapted local genotypes. Thus quality seeds banks of varieties with better adaptation to regional ecosystems were established and production was stimulated, as was the local use of organic fertilizers and biopesticides.

A system of extension was implemented employing international projects, which introduced new technologies permitting diversification of commercialization.

Rice is the staple diet in almost all developing countries and Cuba is no exception. In fact it is among the largest consumers in Latin America. Annual sowing covers more than 200,000 hectares.
