Canada Wheat Acreage
June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian farmers, among the world's largest wheat exporters, will plant 25.2 million acres with grain this year, unchanged from the acreage they indicated two months ago, a new survey conducted by Statistics Canada showed.

Farmers in Canada harvested 25.86 million metric tons of wheat last year, up 9.8 percent from a year earlier, though about half the 2004 crop was rated low-quality feed wheat because of frost in August and wet harvest conditions. Total wheat acreage planted was about 25.5 million acres, down 3 percent from 2003, the agency said a year ago.

Farmers raised their planned seedings of spring wheat, which is used by breadmakers, to 18.4 million acres, from 18.2 million indicated in the April survey. They will plant 5.64 million acres of durum wheat, which is used for pasta, compared with 5.82 million acres in the earlier survey.

The Canadian Wheat Board yesterday forecast farmers to produce 22 million tons of wheat this year, as heavy rains left some fields too wet for planting. Barley production will probably fall 4.9 percent to 11.7 million tons, it said.

Wet conditions slowed planting in southeastern Manitoba, StatsCan said. In that region, 50 percent to 60 percent of fields have been seeded, compared with 80 percent to 90 percent in the rest of the province.

About 29,200 farmers participated in the survey, which was conducted from May 16 to June 3. StatsCan said. Farmers in Canada do the bulk of their seeding in May.

Wheat for September delivery rose 0.75 cents to $3.4575 a bushel yesterday on the Chicago Board of Trade, down 2.4 percent from a year ago.

Canada accounts for about 14 percent of international trade in milling wheat, tying Australia for second place, the Wheat Board said. The U.S. is the world's largest exporter with 26 percent of the international wheat market.
