Canada Wheat Crop Seen Down 8.3% on Excessive Rains
Farmers in western Canada will harvest 22 million metric tons of wheat this year, down 8.3 percent from a year ago, as heavy rains left some fields too wet for planting, the Canadian Wheat Board said. Barley production will fall 4.9 percent to 11.7 million tons.

``Excessive moisture across the Prairies, especially in parts of Alberta and Manitoba, has already taken almost 2 million acres out of overall crop production because farmers have not been able to plant,'' said Bruce Burnett, the CWB's director of weather and crop surveillance, at a news conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Wheat futures for December delivery rose 0.75 cent to $3.4575 a bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade, the seventh gain in eight sessions. Prices reached $3.56 yesterday, the highest since March 18. A futures contract is an obligation to buy or sell a commodity at a set price for delivery by a specific date.

Planting of Canada's spring wheat crop was 50 percent completed by the middle of May, as much as five days ahead of normal, before more than 200 millimeters of rain (about 8 inches) fell over the next four weeks, prompting farmers to delay or cancel seeding plans, Burnett said.

Reduced Plantings

Wheat, barley, canola and other grain plantings are expected to fall 2.2 percent to 53.94 million acres this year from 55.14 million sown last year, the Wheat Board said. A Statistics Canada survey of farmers in March indicated 54.76 million acres would be planted with grain. StatsCan will update its estimate based on a new survey at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow in Ottawa.

Canada accounts for about 14 percent of international trade in milling wheat, tying Australia for second place, the Wheat Board said. The U.S. is the world's largest exporter with 26 percent of the international wheat market.

Production of canola, an oilseed crushed into cooking oil and animal feed, will fall to 7.0 million tons from 7.7 million last year, the Wheat Board predicted. Planted acreage will decline to 12.3 million from 13.06 million, it said.

World wheat production will fall 3.4 percent to 603 million tons from a record 624.5 million tons, the board said.

Production prospects have increased slightly in the U.S and China while crops are forecast to fall in Europe, the former Soviet Union and in North Africa, Burnett said.

``Even with some production problems around the world, wheat production is still above the five-year average,'' Burnett said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture on June 10 projected the world wheat harvest at 612.4 million tons.
