Seoul Expected To Delay Rice Deal Approval Until Sept
SEOUL, June 21 Asia Pulse - South Korea's parliament will likely postpone the ratification of a rice tariff waiver agreement until September due to strong protests from farmers, government officials said Tuesday.

Late last year, Seoul agreed with nine rice exporting countries to raise its rice import quota to 7.96 per cent by 2014 from the present 4 per cent in return for a 10-year delay in rice tariffication

According to the officials at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the governing Uri Party believes it is impossible to have the agreement ratified during the current extraordinary session of the National Assembly, given farmers' opposition.
The plenary meeting of the ongoing session is scheduled to begin on June 28.
The party plans to draw up measures to support the local farming industry before trying to approve the rice pact during the assembly's regular session in September, they added.
Fierce opposition from farmers has also prompted opposition parties to hesitate in trying to ratify the agreement which farmers' groups say will wreak havoc on domestic rice growers.
In an effort to block the parliamentary ratification, farmers' organizations are set to stage protest rallies across the nation before holding a mass rally in front of the National Assembly in central Seoul next Tuesday.
The ministry said lawmakers should ratify the rice agreement during the June parliamentary session, saying any delay could lead to conflicts with the rice exporting countries.
"Regardless of attempts to postpone the ratification, the government will try to persuade lawmakers to approve the rice deal within this month," said a ministry official.
