Rice short in Australia
PAPUA New Guinea will play a part to help a major Australian rice grower as it finds ways to address a severe rice shortage in Australia. Riverina Ricegrowers Co-operative (RRC), which owns the SunRice brand, will package some of its rice imported from other countries in Lae as it tries to address the worst rice harvest in Australia in 30 years. The rice shortage was caused by a severe drought. RRC is Australia’s biggest exporter of branded food products. But this year, it will buy between 300,000 and 400,000 tonnes of foreign rice to keep faith with its buyers overseas. Chief executive Gary Helou said he expected to buy rice from Asia and the Middle East, apart from supplies sourced from California. The grain will be milled and packaged at Lae and in the Middle East. Shipping costs and quarantine laws prevent large scale imports of raw product to the Leeton, New South Wales mill. The collapse of this year’s crop has already cost 75 jobs in the Riverina, SunRice said. The company is a major employer in the NSW Riverina. Ricegrowers from the Griffith-Leeton area and the Deniliquin-Finley region, north of the Victoria-NSW border, have watched their crops fall from 530,000 tonnes in 2003 to 380,000 last year. At 305,000 tonnes this year, the yield will be 70 per cent down on the pre-drought average, said Mr Helou. Restricted irrigating, reduced planting and a February cold snap were blamed for the collapse. Mr Helou said overseas sales would be down about 20 per cent. “Our sales will be only marginally impacted,’’ he said.
