Brazilian Farmers will participate in demonstration
Sao Paulo - At least 70,000 farmers will participate today in a national demonstration. The objective is to call the government's attention to the situation of insolvency in which Brazilian grain growers find themselves. The crisis, they say, is not only behind fazenda gates. Supplies of inputs, cooperatives, financial agents, merchants and service suppliers also suffer the effects of the agricultural losses. Because of the decline of the harvest and its results on the other, associated productive activites, the Brazilian Association of Machine and Equipment Industries (Abimaq) decided to support the farmers' demonstration. The sales of this sector have fallen 21% through April compared with the first four months of 2004. Protests are expected against the government's economic policy. When they acquired their inputs, say the organizers, the dollar was quoted at R$2.90. Now, when they need to sell their crops, the rate of exchange is down to R$2.40. "This account does not close," said Cocamar Agroindustrial president Luiz Lourenço. Another protest is against interest rates. "It does no good to extend the payments on rural credit." The farmers also owe the trading companies, the input suppliers, the cooperatives and the banks. "And the interest rates are those of the market." There will be demonstrations in the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Goiás and Tocantins. About 5,000 farmers in Rio Grande do Sul plan to halt traffic between Esteio and Porto Alegre in that state with 350 tractors and harvesters, 262 trucks and about 100 horsemen.

The Rio Grande do Sul manifestation should concentrate in front of the state secretariates of Agriculture and of Finance, in the center of the Gaúcho capital, Porto Alegre. The farmers who don't take their machines will ride in leased buses. The demonstrators will leave the Assis Brasil Park, in Esteio, 15 kilometers from the locale where the protests will be staged. The organizers calculate that beginning at 7:00 a.m., about 5,000 farmers will be in the park awaiting the moment of departure. The manifestation in the center of Porto Alegre should take place beginning at 11:00 a.m. In Paraná, the farmers will gather in the Londina Expositions Park. Again, about 5,000 demonstrators are expected. Just from Cocamar, in Maringá, about 1,000 farmers should participate.
