Hybrid rice area exceeds target
THE area planted for hybrid rice has reached 180,167 ha. well over the target of 175,000 ha. set by the Department of Agriculture (DA).

Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap said, "farmers have become more interested in planting hybrid rice."

"Based on recent production reports, yield advantage of hybrid seeds has reached 37 percent greater than of certified inbred seeds." Secretary Yap says. "It is fortunate that more of our farmers have become interested in hybrid rice."

"Hybrid rice is the DA's answer in meeting the country's rice requirement," he added. "With hybrid rice, farmers can increase yields even without adding new rice areas. Hybrid rice cultivation, hand-in hand with the utilization of certified seeds (CS) contributed to the sustained yield of palay production in the country."

In the same light, Ginintuang Masaganang Ani (GMA) Rice program director Frisco M. Malabanan praised the DA- Regional Field Units (DA-RFUs) for their efforts in exceeding the target area for hybrid rice cultivation.

"The GMA Rice Program gives the credit back to the RFUs", Malabanan said. It is through their efforts that farmers have become more aware of the benefits of planting hybrid rice.

Malabanan added that the RFUs have been working hard in promoting hybrid rice. Among the production support services given by the DA were the subsidy on hybrid seed procurement, establishment of technology demonstration areas and the conduct of technical briefings on hybrid rice technology.

"Apart from the RFUs, the GMA Rice Program acknowledges the efforts of private seed companies, local government units, DA attached agencies such as the Philippine Rice Research Institute, the National Irrigation Administration, the National Food Authority, the Bureau of Soils and Water Management, the Quedan and Rural Credit Guarantee Corporation, the Agricultural Credit Policy Council, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics and the Bureau of Post Harvest Research and Extension."

Malabanan said that these agencies have been instrumental in the GMA Rice Program's efforts in reaching rice self-sufficiency and providing a stable supply of affordable rice for consumers.

"With the cooperation of all rice industry stakeholders we are well on our way to reaching the 15.12 million MT targeted production for 2005," Dir. Malabanan said. "With yields exceeding 14 tons per hectare, we can very well increase farmer's income and provide affordable rice for all." (DA)
