Export Competition Strengthens for Wheat, Weakens for Corn in 2005/06
Whereas the global supply and import demand picture for both wheat and corn is largely unchanged from last year, the export competition picture differs sharply for these two grains. For wheat, competition is expected to be strong as exporter stocks are beginning at high levels and most Northern Hemisphere new crops are in good condition. Ample supplies in the EU and Black Sea region will be available to buyers in Mediterranean markets. A return to more normal crop quality in Canada is also expected to increase competition for spring wheat. Consequently, U.S. wheat exports are forecast to fall 2.5 million tons.

U.S. corn exports, in contrast, will benefit from weaker competition. Record yields in Argentina are unlikely to be repeated, which will reduce production and exportable supplies. China’s exports are forecast to be smaller as domestic consumption continues to outpace production. In addition, Ukraine’s exports will drop as a result of a smaller crop.
