Genetically modified rice in China proves beneficial?
The Chinese field study focused on two rice varieties genetically modified to be pest resistant. One variety, known as Bt rice, contains a bacterium gene already widely used in other GM crops. Bt pesticide has been used for many years and is considered safe since it degrades quickly. The other GM rice variety was altered with a pest-resistant gene from a cowpea plant.

The GM rice seed was sold to selected farmers who received no compensation for their participation in the study. In addition, farmers were left to decide if and when to use pesticides based on the conditions of their crops. For two years the study followed the crop yield, pesticide use and farmer health of GM rice growers and regular rice growers.

GM rice growers report 6 to 9 percent more yield and an 80 percent reduction in pesticide use compared to farmers using non-GM crops. More importantly, none of the farmers growing the GM rice report harmful health effects. By contrast, up to 10 percent of non-GM rice growers report a pesticide-induced illness in a year.

There are concerns that pests will develop resistance to the GM rice, as they have against other pesticides. Usually, unaltered crops are planted near the main GM crop, taking up to 20 percent of the total acreage of a particular farm. This provides a refuge for nonresistant insects to breed so that selection will not favor a GM crop-resistant pest. China is the only country without a buffer requirement.

Seeing the productivity gains, India and other developing countries may emulate China, according to Rozelle. In other words, this could “trigger a GM world revolution,” he said. Countries such as Bangladesh, where rice is the source of 80 percent of consumed calories, are expected to follow the lead of the world’s largest spender on agricultural research and development.
