Global price rise drives rice exports to 1.3 million tonne this calendar
India’s rice exports from January through mid-April 2005 are estimated at around 1.3 million tonne (mt), as compared to 1.4 mt registered during January-June 2004. Softer prices in the domestic market and a rise in the global prices resulted in the improved exports of the country.

Official trade data for January show exports at 445,000 tonne, including 134,000 tonne to Bangladesh (mostly by land) and 28,000 tonne to Sri Lanka. Other major destinations were Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and South Africa.

According to Global Agriculture Information Network (GAIN), unofficial data compiled from information provided by a private shipping agency, show exports at 221,500 tonne in February, 290,200 tonne in March and 3,27,650 tonne through mid-April. This does not include rice shipments to Bangladesh by land route.

Reversing its course from last month, Asian prices have risen steadily. In Thailand, prices remain supported by the government intervention program, which has been extended to the dry crop. Thai 100B is currently quoted at $302 per tonne, FOB, up $7 from last month.

Viet prices have rebounded as well, but ample exportable supplies have tempered further price gains. Viet 5% is currently quoted at $265 per ton, FOB, up $3 from last month. In contrast, prices in India have softened slightly over the last month with 5% quoted at $265 per tonne, FOB, down $5 from last month.

Despite the disappointing 2004 harvest, sales from India are anticipated to be about 2.5 million tonne, only marginally lower than last year, as the expected strength of world prices must enable the country to remain competitive, especially on the parboiled market.

It is worth mentioning that global trade is estimated to fall nearly 1.0 million tonne in 2005 as major importing countries, such as Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines are estimated to have record or near-record supplies. This decline in import demand comes during a year when supplies in major exporting countries such as Thailand are relatively tight.

However, those countries that need to import will face higher global prices than the last couple of years. Asian prices had softened slightly in March. In Thailand, a lack of fresh overseas demand, coupled with new crop supplies had put downward pressure on prices.

FAO has in its latest forecast said that the rice trade in 2005 will near 25.8 million tonne, which would mean a 3% fall from the amount traded in 2004. Much of the contraction in rice trade this year should arise from a sharp reduction in Thailand’s exports, from the exceptionally high 10.1 million tonne shipped in 2004.
