Wheat board changes organic-wheat program
The Canadian Wheat Board is making it easier for organic farmers to sell their wheat and durum.

Beginning with the new crop year, organic farmers will be able to sell their grain and fix a final price, all on the same day.

Selling organic grain through the Canadian Wheat Board has been a bone of contention for many farmers because of the hassle of working within the system.

Most organic farmers find their own markets, but when it comes time to sell, they have to buy their grain back from the wheat board before they can ship it to the buyer.

Wheat board spokesman David Elias says the new "organic spread contract" means farmers will still have to buy back their wheat, but some of the irritants are now gone.

"They had to wait a lot longer for the ultimate cost of selling their own grain to be settled," he says. "With this new program, they can settle up with the Canadian Wheat Board on the given day they make their sale."

Arnold Taylor, resident of the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate, is still waiting for more details on the program – but so far, he likes what he sees.

"Anything they can do to streamline the system and make it more accessible and less risk and less paperwork for the organic farmer will be beneficial," he says.

The organic spread contract program begins Aug. 1, however, farmers will have to decide before then how much grain they want to sell through it.
