Pakistan ECC allows free wheat movement
The decision was taken keeping in view of an expected bumper wheat output of around 22 million tons against a target of 20.2 million tons. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, who presided over the meeting, expressed the hope that the bumper crop would stabilize wheat and flour prices and provide relief to people.

Briefing newsmen at the Prime Minister's Secretariat, Finance Adviser Dr Ashfaq Hassan Khan said that the ECC noted that the wheat production was 1.8 million tons above the target.

"There will be no restriction on inter-district and inter-provincial movement of wheat in the country," he said. The committee decided for the first time to maintain strategic along with operational wheat reserves, he said. Earlier, only operational reserves were maintained, he said.

Dr Khan said the committee decided that 3.83 million tons of wheat would be maintained in operational reserves and 900,000 tons in strategic reserves. The private sector would also be involved in procurement, he said.

The ECC, he said, decided to encourage the provincial governments to supply wheat to flour mills according to their capacity. Keeping in view increased demand for cars and interest shown by certain companies to manufacture new models of vehicles in the country under 'completely built unit', the committee decided to enhance import duty concession of 50 per cent from 1300cc to 1350cc cars, he said.

Dr Khan said 1.58 million cotton bales purchased by the Trading Corporation would be disposed of and a committee had been constituted in this regard. He said the ECC had decided to call open tenders from local and foreign buyers for quick disposal of cotton before the new crop for the benefit of farmers.

For promoting the minerals sector in Balochistan, the committee decided to allow duty-free import of 10 to 12 new vehicles for the Saindak, Doodar and Rekodiq projects, he said. It allowed tariff relief for the import of construction machinery for the promotion of the sector, he said.

The ECC was informed that during the first nine months of the current financial year the country's exports grew by 14.68 per cent to $10.21 billion. The imports registered a growth of 37.8 per cent and stood at $14.47 billion and the trade deficit was recorded at $4.26 billion, the adviser said. He said the committee was informed that the Central Board of Revenue had collected Rs404 billion, showing an increase of 13.3 per cent.
