4.73 million tonnes wheat to be procured this year in Pakistan
The government will procure 4.73 million tonnes of wheat this year under the “Wheat Procurement Policy, 2005” against the last year’s procurement of 5.3 million tonnes.

The wheat procurement will include strategic reserves of 1.5 million tonnes, a senior government official told Daily Times.

The official said that the ministry of food, agriculture and livestock (MinFal) has submitted a summary for final approval to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet that will meet on April 12. The summary moved by the MinFal was included in the ECC agenda at the last moment, as the wheat harvest has started in Sindh while harvesting in Punjab will begin from April 15.

According to the summary, the government will purchase 4.73 million tonnes this year against last year’s procurement of 5.3 million tonnes showing a decrease of 0.57 million tonnes.

The official said that the government will purchase 3.1 million tonnes in Punjab, 0.5 million tonnes in Sindh, and 0.03 million tonnes in Baluchistan. According to the Summary, PASSCO will purchase 1.2 million tonnes of wheat on its own in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh.

The PASSCO will establish around 20 purchasing centers in Punjab and Sindh provinces as the government expects that wheat production will stand at 21.2 million tons this year, that will be more than the national requirement for principal food grain.

According to the official estimates, the wheat production will touch 21.2 million tons against the targeted 20.2 million tonnes for this year to break the record production of 21.1 million tons achieved in 1999-2000.

The expected record production will make the country not only self-sufficient in wheat, but it will turn the country into wheat exporting country once again after the year 2000. However, at a recent meeting of the Federal Committee on Agriculture, the MinFal Minister Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan has declined to comment whether or not the government would allow the wheat export this year. The national requirement has been estimated at 20.8 million tons that include the requirement of Afghanistan, which, usually, goes across the border by the means of smuggling, the official said.
