Wto Completes Review of South Korea's Rice Deal
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has effectively concluded its review of South Korea's agreement with nine rice exporting countries on a delay in its tariffication, the government said Wednesday.

Late last year, Seoul reached the deal with the United States and eight other exporters, under which it will postpone rice tariffication till 2014 in exchange for granting them greater access to the domestic rice market.

"The WTO has virtually wrapped up its review since no other WTO members opposed the accord," an official at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said.

If the government receives formal approval from the global trade governing body, it will send the agreement to the National Assembly for ratification in June, he said.

Under the deal, the exporters' access to the local rice market will be raised to 7.96 per cent from the current 4 per cent of domestic consumption.

Seoul will also allow the direct sale of government-imported rice to consumers. The portion of direct sale will reach 30 per cent of the total imports by 2010.

The wider market opening, which came despite local farmers' strong opposition, is feared to price domestically grown rice out of the market.

Locally grown rice costs 3-4 times more than foreign rice. The government has said it will step up efforts to nurture corporate farms to brace for the planned rise in import quotas.
