Thai export prices lower
Export prices for most grades of rice eased in response to the weakening of the Thai baht to around 39.2 baht/U.S.$, as compared to the previous week’s average of 38.5 baht/U.S.$. Trade sources reported that this weakening baht could reduce the quotations by about U.S.$ 2-3/MT for white rice. However the current export prices were still so high that foreign buyers stayed away from Thai white rice, as domestic prices remained strong due to the tight supply situation. Moreover, export prices of parboiled rice were offered higher, as the surge in domestic paddy prices totally offset the benefit from the weakening of the Thai baht. Most parboiled rice millers reportedly are facing difficulties in securing paddy supplies for parboiled rice production due to smaller second crop supplies resulting from drought and aggressive purchased by the government intervention program. As of March 27, 2005, the government bought 5.2 million tons of paddy, of which 2.9 million tons were white rice paddy, and 2.1 million tons were fragrant rice paddy.

The following are the reported rice exports (as is basis):
