Higher imports lead to fall in coarse rice prices
Prices of coarse rice have started falling as its supply has been boosted by government-initiated open market sale (OMS) and imports, traders said. "There has been increased supply of coarse varieties of rice due to the OMS and imports from India in huge quantities," said one trader at the Shafique Rice Agency at Kawranbazar. The traders said the prices of coarse rice have dropped by upto Tk 2.5 per kilogram at retail level. "The decline in the prices of rice is a great relief to the consumers belonging to the lower income brackets," said Shamsul Alam, a bank accountant. But the prices of finer varieties of rice have registered an upward trend or remained unchanged over the last week. "This is because many of the consumers switched over to generally stable finer varieties in the wake of price hike for coarse rice," another trader said Meanwhile, the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged excepting poultry birds (broiler) in the city markets over the last week. During the last two days at the wholesale markets Paari variety of rice was selling between Tk 620 and Tk 640 per mound compared to its previous rates between Tk 650 and Tk 660 per mound in the city markets. BRRI variety of rice was selling between Tk 600 and Tk 610 per mound compared to its previous rates between Tk 620 and Tk 630 per mound while Indian Saran variety was selling between Tk 550 and Tk 580 per mound compared to its previous rates between Tk 620 and Tk 630 per mound, the traders said. Lata-28 variety of rice was being sold between Tk 640 and Tk 650 per mound compared to its previous rates between Tk 700 and Tk 720 per mound in the markets. The traders said the prices of this particular variety of rice fell mainly due to import of Indian Rant variety of rice. Nazirshail variety of fine rice was selling between Tk 730 and Tk 750 per mound compared to its previous rates between Tk 680 and Tk 710 per mound while Minicate variety of rice was selling between Tk 940 and Tk 950 per mound compared to its previous rates between Tk 640 and Tk 650 per mound in the city markets over the last week. The traders said the prices of finer varieties of rice registered an upward trend in the markets mainly due to increase in the consumption of the same after the rise in the prices of the coarse rice and scarcity of the rice in the markets. In the retail level coarse varieties of rice were selling between Tk 17 and Tk 17.50 per kg compared to their previous rates between Tk 19 and Tk 20 per kg while the finer varieties of rice were being sold between Tk 22 and Tk 23, unchanged from the previous week, the traders said. The broiler chicken was selling between Tk 82 and Tk 85 per kg compared to its previous rates between Tk 78 and Tk 80 per kg in the city markets, the traders said.
