The rice exports from Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The rice exports from Pakistan would mount to $1 billion by 2006, Chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap) Barrister Najaf Hussain Shah has said.

Talking to a television channel, he said that rice exports this year would surpass $700 million. The country last year exported $653 million rice mostly to Europe, the Gulf States and Far East, he added.

Regarding setting up of a ‘Rice City’, he disclosed that 300 acres of land has been acquired in Gwadar for this purpose, where rice exporters would be building up godowns and warehouses. Efforts were also afoot to obtain 400 acres of land at Pipri in Karachi, he said.

He said that increase in prices of several qualities in international market has also contributed to the rising exports.

The trend of inquires from international market has lifted exporters hopes who estimate that the exports of Irri-6 alone made an impressive growth by increasing their share by 20-25 per cent as compared to 10-15 per cent last year in the total exports.

Varieties of Basmati and Irri-6 would share over 70 per cent in total exports from the country.

He said minor increase in prices would return more profit by the end of current fiscal, as the orders of the Basmati varieties are expected to cross over one million tonnes by June 2005.

During the current season exporters were managed to book orders of other than Basmati variety in a big number, he added.
