Egypt Buys 60,000 Tons of Wheat
Egypt, one of the largest importers of wheat worldwide, agreed to buy 60,000 metric tons of the grain from France. The transaction confirms that U.S. wheat producers are losing share in the Egyptian market.

France will supply 60,000 tons at $128.95 per ton, the General Authority for Supply Commodities, Egypt's main state-grain purchasing body, said in a statement in Cairo, detailing the result of a tender held yesterday for shipments to be delivered from March 20 to March 31. Prices are free on board, meaning that they do not include freight charges.

The authority increasingly turned to Argentina and France this season as they offered lower prices than U.S. suppliers. Egypt's non-state buyers preferred cheaper grain from Russia and Ukraine, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in January.

Egypt was the largest buyer of U.S. wheat in 2003 and 2004 after Nigeria and Mexico, and the world's biggest wheat importer the previous year, according to Australian government statistics.

In the previous tender held on Jan. 15, the General Authority for Supply Commodities ordered 120,000 tons from France, 115,000 tons from Argentina and 60,000 tons of U.S. soft white wheat.

Argentina's harvest is 11 percent bigger than last year, allowing the Latin American nation to offer competitive prices in North Africa, even amid near-record freight prices caused by high oil prices, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Dec. 10.
