Analyst: Wheat Export Totals Surprise Trade
Wheat traders were surprised by the latest weekly export sales report, which beat the experts' forecast for the fourth week in a row, said DTN contributing analyst Doug Hjort.

"Export sales beat the experts' forecast for the fourth week in a row, but analysts and traders still do not want to believe in good news," Hjort wrote in his opening comments for DTN subscribers on Friday.

In addition to favorable exports, the EU offered subsidies on only 148,650 metric tons of wheat, far below what was expected before they rejuvenated their program three weeks ago, Hjort said.

"The amount of the subsidy was a bit larger, but of little consequence in the whole export scheme of things," Hjort said.

"The soybean rally helped hold gains in the wheat market, but did not provide enough support to push wheat prices sharply higher. The difference in these two markets, of course, is that the funds are covering short soybean futures positions, while they are not in the wheat," Hjort explained.

Another bit of supportive news on Thursday was an estimate out of Europe that called for 2005 total grain production in the EU to be down five percent from the large crop in 2004. Wheat is put three percent smaller, while durum is seen off a whopping 27 percent.
