Agriculture Canada Forecasts More Wheat in 2005
Reuters
Canadian farmers will plant more spring wheat, oats and flax and less barley and canola in 2005, Agriculture Canada's market analysis division said in its monthly outlook released late on Monday. All-wheat plantings were forecast at 26.5 million acres, up from 25.7 million acres for the 2004-05 (Aug-July) marketing year, although production was forecast to drop 6 percent to 24.4 million tonnes, assuming more normal yields, federal government analysts said in the report. Canadian farmers normally begin planting their crops in late April. Statistics Canada's first survey of farmers' planting intentions is slated for release on April 21. Barley acres were forecast at 11.1 million acres, Agriculture Canada said, down almost 4 percent from the previous year, with production estimated at 12.2 million tonnes, down from 13.2 million tonnes in 2004. Canola plantings were forecast at 12.4 million acres, down almost 6 percent from the previous year, with production estimated at 6.9 million tonnes, down more than 10 percent from 7.7 million tonnes in 2004. Oat acres were forecast at 5.2 million acres, up 6 percent from 2004, with production forecast at just under 4 million tonnes, up from 3.7 million tonnes in 2004, the report said. Flax plantings were pegged at 2.5 million acres, up 37 percent from the previous year, with production more than doubling at a projected 1.2 million tonnes, up from 517,000 in 2004. The 2004 flax crop was badly damaged by frost and harvest delays. Agriculture Canada forecast average flax prices for 2004-05 at between C$500 and C$600 ($400-$480) per tonne because of the small crop. But the analysts said larger supplies from the 2005 crop should pressure flax prices below C$360 a tonne.
