EU wheat export subsidies lower then expected
The European Commission late last week granted export subsidies of €4.00 per tonne (U.S.$5.14) on 134,000 tonnes of soft milling wheat. That level was lower than anticipated by many in the grain trade who had predicted a subsidy of as much as €11 would be needed to make E.U. grain competitive.

When E.C. officials last month announced the resumption of wheat export refunds for the first time since 2003, they noted the move was not a policy shift but was intended to deal with short-term surpluses, particularly in the new central European member states that lack adequate storage. Analysts said the modest level of subsidy granted reflected that intention and signaled the Commission's desire to temper criticism from other wheat exporters.

Nonetheless, the subsidy drew fresh fire from the Canadian Wheat Board. CWB Chairman Ken Ritter said the action was bearish for world wheat prices and had reduced returns for western Canadian farmers.
