S. Korea's Rice Cultivation Area to Fall Below 1 MLN Ha
South Korea's land for cultivation of rice, its stable food, is likely to drop below 1 million hectares (ha) this year for the first time, the government said Tuesday. The rice cultivation area is expected to fall to 986,000 ha at the end of this year, compared with 1,001,000 ha a year earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said.

The expected drop is ascribed to a government drive to encourage farmers to grow other kinds of grain on their rice paddies in an effort to control its rice inventory.

Another reason is that a growing number of rice fields are being converted into land for factories, the ministry said.

After reaching a peak of more than 1.2 million ha in the late 1970s, the area on which rice is cultivated in the country has been on a steady decline.

The decrease is likely to gather momentum from the second half of this year, when those who are not farmers will be allowed to own more arable land, experts said.

The ministry, however, said it will step up efforts to secure more prime rice fields in an attempt to ensure the country's food security.

The anticipated decline in the area for rice cultivation comes as more local farmers tend to avoid growing rice in expectation of a rise in imports of foreign rice.

Late last year, South Korea agreed with the United States and eight other rice exporting countries to raise its import quota to 7.9 per cent of domestic consumption by 2014 in return for an additional 10-year moratorium on rice tariffication. More imported rice will be sold directly to domestic consumers starting in the second half.

Domestic farmers remain opposed to the accord, saying the increase in imports of cheaper foreign rice will price them out of the market.
