Egypt's total rice exports
Egypt's total rice exports from January through the end of September 2004, increased by 31 percent over the same period in 2003. However, due to the recent rise in value of the Egyptian pound, exporters anticipate a negative effect on rice exports for the upcoming season.

During January- September 2004, Egypt exported 538,990 MT of rice compared to 411,252 MT of rice during the same period in 2003. Egyptian rice exports made significant gains mainly due to the devaluation of the Egyptian pound and a barter trade agreement signed between Egypt and Syria in November 2003. The agreement allows for the export of 120,000 MT of Egyptian rice to Syria in exchange for other Syrian commodities such as wheat. However, with the recent rise of the Egyptian pound (by about 6 percent), exporters anticipate a negative effect on rice exports during the upcoming season.

According to rice exporters, there was no ban on Egyptian rice exports to Turkey, but the new Turkish import license system has negatively affected the quantity of Egyptian rice exported to Turkey.
