EU wheat subsidies to raise US' hackles
The European Union said on Thursday it would revive wheat export subsidies, a move likely to be welcomed by EU exporters, but one that could also spark trade tensions with the US.

The Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures fell 3 to 5 cents a bushel at midday after the EU announcement.

The European Commission has come under increasing pressure from exporters such as France to reinstate subsidies. The decision means first bidding would be from January 28, with the first result on February 3.

“The alternative would have been a rapid build-up in intervention stocks, which could not be avoided,” European Commission spokesman Michael Mann said.

“This would have been considerably more expensive not least because these stocks cannot be disposed of in the foreseeable future,” he said.

The latest EU data on Thursday showed 7.37m tonnes of grain in EU stores, including 3.56m tonnes of wheat.

French grains office ONIC has repeatedly called for the introduction of subsidies, saying a weak dollar and high freight rates had hindered exports.

The arrival of aggressively priced southern hemisphere wheat, particularly from Argentina, has made sales even tougher.
