Pakistan to gain access to Chinese rice market
Daily Times, Jan 21, 2005
Pakistan and China are expected to sign a protocol agreement within next few weeks, which would allow first-ever entry of Pakistani rice into the Chinese market, the biggest consumer of rice in the world. “The agreement would be signed during visit of Chinese prime minister to Pakistan,” Sun Chuney, Chinese consul general, told reporters on Wednesday after a meeting with local rice exporters. “The visit schedule is yet to be decided but it is expected soon.
Governments of both the countries along with rice exporters would sign the agreement.” He said the Chinese authorities agreed to allow Pakistani rice imports due to rising demand of the commodity in the country. Mr Chuney said the agencies concerned in China have approved Pakistani rice quality. China, the biggest consumer of rice, agreed to buy rice from Pakistan following consent to include it in the list of about 777 odd items that are being given preferential treatment during Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz’s visit to China last month.
Textile and other products items were also considered for inclusion in the list of preferential treatment by China has tough quarantine regulations for imports. The Chinese envoy said the trade between Pakistan and China is focused on industrial goods, which may be further enhanced to other products. He said both the countries are agriculturally-rich and can boost their co-operation in particular sector. “In this regard several developments are going on,” he said. “Protocol for purchase of mango from Pakistan has also been concluded and it would definitely widen trade volume between the countries which stands at around $3 billion.”

A major success: The entry of Pakistani rice in Chinese market is seen as major success as China has tough quarantine regulations for imports. It allowed Pakistani rice imports only after ascertaining the compliance capacity of rice dealers in Pakistan. “We estimate to export 50,000 tonnes of rice to China by the year-end,” said Anwar Miannoor, vice chairman Rice Exporters Associ-ation of Pakistan (REAP). “We are ready to make deals with Chinese buyers and just waiting for a nod from both the governments. If we get success, China can become the largest market of Pakistani rice.” He said Basmati and Irri-6 would be among top varieties expected to find place in Chinese markets.
