Sri Lanka to resume talks on import of Myanmar rice
Yangon, 01/15 - Sri Lanka will resume talks on import of Myanmar rice soon despite temporary suspension of the talks due to Sri Lanka`s hard hit by the recent tsunami, the local 7-Day News reported in its latest issue. Sri Lanka planned to buy 21,000 tons of rice from Myanmar, the Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, the Myanmar government is to grant farmers with priority engaged in crop cultivation in wetland to directly export their harvested paddy for the first time, the report continued to say, quoting wetland growers. Since 1998, farmers have been allowed to export their harvested paddy at a rate of 50 percent of the output volume produced from per 5,000 acres (2,025 hectares). According to official figures, in the fiscal year 2003-04, Myanmar produced 22.94 million tons of paddy out of 6.75 million hectares cultivated. The country exported 106,312 tons of rice in the year, a drop from 678,000 tons in 2002-03 out of temporary rice export ban during the year. With a population of about 53 million now, Myanmar stands as a country with agriculture as the mainstay of its economy. The agricultural output value takes 42 percent of the gross domestic product and the export represents 16 percent of the total. Myanmar has a cultivable land of 18.23 million hectares, of which 16.72 million have been put under crops.
