Thai rice exports hit record in 2004
Thai rice exports for the year 2004hit record high both in volume and value, the Department of Foreign Trade announced Thursday. In 2004, Thailand, already the world's top rice exporter for years, historically exported up to 10.13 million tons of rice, bringing in over 2.7 billion US dollars.

These figures represent a 35 percent increase in volume and a 49 percent increase in value, compared to those in 2003, Rachane Potjanasuntorn, Director-General of the Ministry of Commerce's Department of Foreign Trade was quoted by the Thai News Agency as saying.

Thai jasmine rice proved popular export category last year accounted for 22 percent of the total rice export volume, or 2.24 million tons, representing 33 percent of the total export value, or 890 million US dollars.

Major buyers of Thai rice are Nigeria, South Africa, China, Iran, Iraq, Senegal, Benin, Malaysia, Angola, Ivory Coast, the US.

Favorable market conditions last year also enabled Thai exporters to fetch an average price of 269 US dollars per ton, compared to 242 US dollars in 2003.

For 2005 outlook, demand for Thai rice in the global market is likely to exceed total rice outputs, and prices are likely to rise,as other key producers will have less surplus for export, Rachane said.

Thailand aims to export 8.5 million tons of rice, worth around 2.5 billion US dollars this year.
