The Philippines plans to import at least 1.1 million tonnes
Mania Bulletin
The Philippines plans to import at least 1.1 million tonnes of rice this year, higher than the earlier estimate of 700,000 tonnes to 900,000 tonnes, a senior government official said.

The same official, who requested not to be identified, said Manila raised its import estimate due to possible delays in replanting rice crops damaged by four severe storms in November and December. The government also took into account the possible impact of the El Niño weather pattern and the rise in the price of imported fertilizer, which could affect local yields, the official said.

"The new estimate is higher, it’s at least 1.1 million tonnes," the official said.

The Philippines, an agriculture country, is one of Asia’s largest rice buyers. It imported 985,000 tonnes of rice in 2004.

State-trading firm National Food Authority (NFA) is scheduled to hold a tender on Thursday to buy 320,000 tonnes of either 15-percent or 25-percent broken rice originating from Thailand, Vietnam or China.

The NFA has said suppliers should deliver half of the volume in February and the rest no later than April.
