TCP buys 250,000 tons of Australian wheat
Daily Times
Trading Corp. of Pakistan said Thursday it has bought 250,000 metric tons of white wheat from Australia’s AWB Ltd. and 150,000 tons from the Canadian Wheat Board at $204.50 a ton.

Masood Alam Rizvi, chairman of the state-run corporation, told Dow Jones News-wires the tender was awarded late Wednesday.

He said prices offered by US companies were significantly higher and they didn’t match the offers made by Australians.

The sale was part of Pakistan’s 400,000-ton buy tender.

Mr Rizvi said he expects shipment to be completed within two months after letters of credit are opened for the orders.

Pakistan plans to buy another 100,000 tons of wheat from Russian or Ukranian sources, but some modalities for the tender are yet to be finalized, he said.

In the past few months, the Pakistani government, through the state-run Trading Corp. of Pakistan, imported 926,000 tons of wheat in two tenders from Australian, U.S. and Russian companies to stabilize high flour prices in the country.

Pakistan’s wheat production in the last season fell to 19.7 million tons, below the targeted 20 million tons. In the new season, Pakistan expects to produce 20 million tons from the crop that will be harvested in April 2005.
