Seoul To Announce Rice Talks Results Thursday
South Korea will reveal the results of rice talks with nine rice-exporting countries such as the United States and Thailand on Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said Monday.

Seoul is to submit the country's schedule for rice imports to the World Trade Organization on the same day.

The country has effectively decided to maintain the current import quota system at the expense of greater market access and direct sale of imported rice to consumers.

South Korea received a 10-year moratorium on rice imports under the 1994 Uruguay Round. Over the last decade, the government has gradually increased the purchase of rice to an amount equivalent to 4 per cent of domestic consumption as of this year.

The government said last week its mandatory purchase amount can be raised to 8 per cent of the market or tariff rate quota (TRQ) by 2014, with 30 per cent being sold direct to consumers by 2010.

Seoul is presently working to lower the TRQ to the upper-7-percent level in a symbolic move to alleviate farmers' concerns.

Once an agreement is forwarded to the WTO, the global body may take three months to check the details before giving its approval.
