Iran - Rice self-sufficiency scheme will begin next year
IranMania Poll, Dec 7, 2004
Rice self-sufficiency program would begin from next year, a senior official said on Monday.

Jamil Alizadeh-Shayeq, secretary of the Rice Farmers Association, told ISNA that self-sufficiency in rice production would not be farfetched given the government's success in attaining the same in the strategic wheat sector.

"We would be able to realize this goal provided that the currently high rice production wastes are brought down to a minimum," he said, adding that self-sufficiency in rice production would also depend on the government's decision to guarantee purchase of domestic production coupled with the procurement of required machinery.

The official further noted that rice farming methods have to be mechanized if self-sufficiency is to be attained in the sector.

More than one million tons of rice was imported in the year to March 2004, whereas experts contend the country needed a maximum of 400,000 tons of rice imports in the period. Given the high costs of production, many rice farmers say it is no longer economical for them to continue the business.

Experts say the deterioration of rural economies in the wake of irregularities in the domestic rice market will lead to a rise in migration from rural areas to major cities, which will create social instability in the country.

Some 620,000 hectares are under rice cultivation countrywide. Iran's total rice production stands at 2.2 million tons per annum whereas the country's annual rice consumption is almost three million tons.
