Vietnam to Benefit From Thai Rice Price Hike
Vietnam can increase its rice exports if the price of Thai rice remains at its current high rate, said the Ministry of Trade. The ministry said importers can buy rice from Vietnam and other less expensive producers instead of Thailand as Thai rice surged to US$5 to US$8 per tonne for 5 per cent broken rice on the global market over the course of last week, reaching this year's high record of US$255 - 263 per tonne compared to Vietnam's US$228.

The Thai trade ministry's purchase of a large quantity of rice at higher prices in order to increase the country's overall stockpile caused the price of Thai rice to rise.
The Thai ministry reported that Thailand exported a record of 1.09 million tonnes of rice in October alone and it expected to ship more than 10 million tonnes this year.
In Vietnam, paddy prices remain high at VND2,400 (US$0.15) and VND2,600 per kilo at Vietnam's rice granary in the Mekong Delta region. The Vietnamese price for export rice remained stable after the increase last week, staying at US$216 per tonne.
The ministry forecasts that the price of rice in the domestic market will inch up for the rest of the year as local supply could be limited and world's rice demand and price will likely increase. Vietnam in the first week of November exported more than 91,000 tonnes of rice worth US$22.9 million, up 82 and 109 per cent in terms of volume and value, respectively, over the same period last month, the trade ministry reported.
The ministry said the Ivory Coast and Malaysia were the largest importers, spending US$6.3 million and US$5.9 million for Vietnam's rice imports.
The ministry believed with the pace of export, Vietnam can export 3.9 to 4 million tonnes of rice this year, increasing its export turnover by US$140 million to US$830 million.
The ministry also said Vietnam will export around 200,000 tonnes of rice to Cuba next year
