Canada Wheat Farmers want end to CWB
Illinois Farm Bureau, November 18, 2004
The vast majority of Prairie farmers and agriculture-based businesses surveyed by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business want the Canadian government to get rid of the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly, said U.S. Wheat Associates in its weekly newsletter.

The survey revealed that 81 per cent of the respondents support "increased marketing options,” noted Marilyn Braun-Pollon, CFIB’s director of provincial affairs for Saskatchewan.

"Our members are saying they should have the freedom to choose when and where they market their wheat and barley," said Janice Storozuk, a spokeswoman for CFIB, according to the Winnipeg Sun.

Last year, the Alberta provincial government released results of an Ipsos-Reid poll, conducted in September and October 2003, which showed 68% of Alberta growers want the option to sell their barley to anyone, including the Canadian Wheat Board, while 64% of producers want the same option for wheat.

The Canadian Wheat Board has also conducted surveys, including two in 1998-1999.

According to the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association, however, the CWB maintained a "veil of secrecy" around polls that tested its popularity with farmers. A press release by the WCWG said "Board officials have admitted the 1998 poll showed only one-third of farmers favour the monopoly, one-third support a dual (voluntary) marketing system and one-third want an open market."
