Thailand expects record rice export
Bangkok (VNA), NOvember 12, 2004
Thailand's rice export is expected to reach a record this year and continue to surge in volume and value next year, according to the KASIKORN Research Center (KRC).

The country's rice export has surged to an unprecedented level while those of India and China have declined.

KRC said Thailand's rice export has increased significantly in China, Africa and the Middle East due to higher demand although supply has not risen much.

World rice output is projected to increase by 2.6 percent this year to 397.4 million tonnes because production among key growers, including Thailand, Viet Nam, India and the Philippines, has risen.

Rice trade on the world market in 2005 is expected to grow 1.3 percent to 23 million tonnes from this year.

World rice stock is likely to decline by 16.7 percent to 68.05 million tonnes, particularly in China, Thailand, and India, where the amount has dropped to its lowest since 1983.

Because of this, world rice prices are expected to remain high for next year.

KRC projected that Thailand's rice paddy output in the 2004/2005 crop would rise by 1.9 percent to around 27.1 million tonnes since farmers are motivated by high prices.

Still, droughts and floods are dampening the country's rice output growth.

Thailand's rice export next year is forecast to surge to at least 9 million tonnes, close to this year's level.
