Indonesia to export 100,000 tons of rice next year
Asia Pulse, November 10, 2004
Indonesia's state-owned Perum Bulog has signed a contract to export rice to African and Middle Eastern countries totalling 50,000 tons for shipment until February, 2005, and another 50,000 tons for shipment until the end of 2005.

"We signed the sales contract in October this year with the price pegged to the world market price," Bulog President Director Widjanarko Puspoyo told reporters.

He said the exports would not disrupt domestic stocks as national production this year was good.

Asked if a special agreement had been made with the African countries in connection with the planned export, Widjanarko said, "This is pure business and it is cash and carry."

He declined to name the African countries that would import the Indonesian rice.

Widjanarko predicted the rice price would increase in the next six months in the international market due to decreasing supply from producing countries such as Thailand and Vietnam.

"We have taken measures to secure the domestic price by providng a stock totalling 2.06 million tons," he said.
