Philippine Govt Forecasts Less Rice Imports In 2005
The National Food Authority (NFA) is projecting less rice imports in 2005 amid growing palay production in the Philippines.
NFA administrator Gregorio Tan, Jr. said the projected rice import volume of 700,000 to 900,000 metric tons (MT) in 2005 is lower compared to this year's total rice imports of 985,000
Tan said the difference between next year's projected rice import volume and this year's indicates a positive performance in the local palay production.
The 900,000 MT already includes allocations for farmer organizations (FOs) and the private sector, he said.
To break the monopoly of NFA in rice importation, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has directed the agency to open up the trade to FOs and the private sector beginning last 2002.
Tan, however, stressed that volume of rice imports could still vary due to the El Nio phenomenon and its impact on the local crop.
He explained that the Inter-Agency Committee (IAC) on rice and corn will decide on the volume of rice imports.
IAC is composed of the National Economic Development Authority, Department of Agriculture and other concerned national government agencies. The National Farmers' Action Council (NFAC) is also a member of the IAC.
The IAC meets every quarter of the year to access local production to determine any shortfall in the supply of rice and corn, Tan said
