Millions of rais of rice fields affected by severe drought
The government has estimated that five million rai (2.5 rai = 1 acre) of rice paddy in Thailand's 26 provinces will be affected by a severe drought in the coming months.

More than three million rai of land is likely to be completely destroyed by what is expected to be the worst drought to hit the country in more than two decades, the Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Banphot Hongthong told TNA on Wednesday.

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry has issued warnings to farmers to skip their dry season crops because of the expected water shortage, especially in the central provinces of Suphanburi and Uthai Thani, and the northeastern province of Nakorn Ratchasima.

Water should only be used for human consumption, said Mr. Banphot.

The authorities plan to release more water from the Bhumibhol Dam in the northwestern province of Tak, from 7 million cubic metres a day to 10 million, in order to raise the water level of the Ping River, which has been used to irrigate the farm land in the lower northern provinces.

Almost 1,000 water pumps have been distributed to help ease the water shortages in the provinces hardest hit by the lack of water.

The office of artificial rain has increased its flights to nearly 100 in five provinces in an attempt to help fill the shrinking reservoirs and canals.
