EU cuts import duty on Pakistani rice
Pakistan Link, November 4, 2004
The export of rice to the European countries is expected to rise as the business community has shown more interest in Pakistani commodity following relaxation in import duties.

The rice exporters, returned from Paris after attending Food Festival, informed that the European countries have eliminated import duty on brown rice while duty on white rice was reduced three times. They believe that relaxation in duties would have positive impact as it would help increase in the export of rice to the European countries.

According to the sources, the export of rice to the European countries stand at 90,000 ton in the financial year 2003-4 while it is expected to increase to 1,50,000 tons in the financial year 2004-5 due to reduction in duties.

The members of delegation, who attended Food Festival in Paris, informed that traders in European countries have shown increased interest in Pakistani rice due to high quality and no or lesser import duties.

The former chairman of Rice Exporters Association, Zafar Malik, said that environment was conducive for the increase in export of rice to the European countries. He revealed that traders in France and United Kingdom have shown greater interest to import rice from Pakistan in extra quantity.

He urged the rulers to utilise its links with Chinese government and make necessary arrangements to capture bigger market of China.

There will be no need of European market when rice is exported to a bigger state of the liking of China, he added.
