Viet Nam Rice exports pick up
Viet Nam News
The country’s export earnings from rice is expected to increase by $140 million to $830 million this year, according to the ministry.
Though the export target for 2004 of 3.9 million tonnes is same as in 2003, rising world prices, up $33 for a tonne of rice, have resulted in this huge increase in revenue, ministry officials said.
The country has already exported around 3.3 million tonnes of rice in the first nine months of this year.
Prices have also risen because major world rice exporters, China and India, saw a drop in rice export volumes by 60 and 50 per cent respectively.
The success of Viet Nam’s special fragrant rice in the world market, which rose five-fold from last year, is yet another reason fuelling exports, according to Truong Thanh Phong, Chairman of the Viet Nam Food Association (Vietfood).
More importantly, the price of fragrant rice rose to $280-$340 a tonne compared to $200 for a tonne of traditional or broken rice.
Viet Nam will meet the export demand of 100,000 tonnes of fragrant rice to Europe this year, Phong said.
To sustain the pace of export of fragrant rice and compete with Thailand in the world market, domestic producers have to increase productivity, and supply new, high-yielding and high-quality rice.
While prices are expected to increase for the rest of the year, Vietfood has urged local rice exporters to study the world market carefully to avoid any losses.
In 2005, the world’s rice consumption is expected to increase to 25.4 million tonnes.
