E.U. and Thailand agree to increase rice quotas, cut rice tariffs
The Nation, October 19, 2004
Thailand and the European Union have reached a compromise that will lower import tariffs and increase the trading blocks import quota of Thai white rice by another 4,000 tonnes a year.

At a meeting late last week EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy offered to increase its import quota by 4,000 tonnes from a current quota of 23,267 tonnes for Thai rice, said Apiradi Tantraporn, director general of the Trade Negotiations Department.

But, the EU rejected Thailands proposal to reduce tariffs on white rice.

It is currently taxed at 110 euros more per tonne than brown rice and trade negotiators were hoping to narrow the gap to '80 per tonne.

EU has committed to increasing its quota for all rice exporting countries after implementing a new rice policy on September 1.

The new policy imposes a '175 per tonne import tariff on all white and jasmine rice imports compared with the prior rate of '416.The EU has set up some conditions for Thai rice exports. If EU imports a huge volume of Thai rice, import tariff reductions will be low. On other hand, if EU imports a low quantity, the reduction will be high, she said.
