Small Grain Production Down

Wheat yield, at 64 bushels per acre, was down 4 bushels per acre from last year. Harvested acres were down 3 percent from 2003 at 640,000 acres. Production decreased 9 percent to 40.96 million bushels. Harvest began the second week in July and was wrapped up by the second week in August.
Because of the cool, wet summer, most farmers experienced varying degrees of disease in their crop. Correlating with weather during the critical flowering period, damage ranged from mild to severe.

Oat yield was down 3 percent from 2003 at 68 bushels per acre. Harvested acres, at 65,000, were down 13 percent from last year. Oat production was down 16 percent from 2003 at 4.42 million bushels. Despite cool, wet weather in May, oat planting and emergence was on par with normal. Harvest began in the middle of July and was completed by the second week of September, slightly behind average. Growers reported good quality and harvesting conditions.

Barley yield, at 51 bushels per acre, was down 5 bushels per acre from 2003. Harvested acres, at 12,000, were also down from last year. Barley production fell to 612,000 bushels, down 22 percent from 2003. Barley planting was delayed by cool, wet weather early in the year, but the crop progressed well through the remainder of the growing season. Over half of the crop was rated good to excellent going into harvest. Combining concluded the second week in September.

Nationally, all wheat production totaled 2.16 billion bushels in 2004, up 2 percent from the last forecast but 8 percent below 2003. Grain area is 50.2 million acres, down 5 percent from last year. The U.S. yield is 43.1 bushels per acre, down 1.1 bushels from a year ago. Oat production is estimated at 117 million bushels, 9 percent below the August 1 forecast and 19 percent below last year's 144 million bushels.
The estimated yield is 64.5 bushels per acre, down 1.5 bushels from August and down 0.5 bushel from a year ago. Record high yields are estimated in South Dakota and Washington.
Harvested areais 1.81 million acres, 7 percent below the August 1 forecast and 19 percent below last year. Barley production is estimated at 280 million bushels, up 3 percent from the August 1 forecast and up 1 percent from last year. Average yield per acre, at a record high 69.5 bushels, is up 3.8 bushels from the last forecast and 10.6 bushels from 2003. The area harvested for grain is estimated at 4.03 million acres, down 3 percent from August and 15 percent below a year ago.
