Fixed price for the rice on the open market in Bangladash
The New Nation, October 19, 2004
The decision was taken yesterday at a meeting with Food and Disaster Management Minister Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf in the Chair at the ministry conference room.

Under the OMS programme, per kilogram rice would be sold at Tk 13 while 10,700 dealers would be involved in selling the rice. Each person would be able to buy the highest three kgs of rice everyday.

The meeting directed the local administration to take necessary measures for ensuring smooth management system during the selling of the rice under the OMS.

Deputy Minister for Food and Disaster Management Asadul Habib Dulu, Secretary of the ministry Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury and other officials concerned attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, Minister for Commerce Altaf Hossain Chowdhury yesterday visited the city’s New Market and looked after the prices of essentials.

He visited some grocery shops, vegetable and rice shops and asked them about prices of rice and essential items.

Commerce Secretary Aminur Rahman also accompanied the minister.

Iskandar Ali, a vegetable shopkeeper informed the Minister that they were selling potato at Tk 14 per kg, onion Tk 30 (local variety) and Tk 26 (Indian) per kg, aubergine at Tk 75 to Tk 80 per kg, bean at Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg, green chilly at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg, korolla at Tk 40, lady’s finger Tk 40 per kg, potol Tk 30, papaya Tk 14 per kg, cucumber Tk 40, cauliflower at Tk 25 per piece, ginger at Tk 65 (local) per kg and Tk 110 (Chinese) per kg, lentil Tk 46 per kg and pumpkin (sweet) Tk 14 per kg.

A rice businessman, Altaf Hossain Pilot told the Commerce Minister from North Bengal over telephone that they were selling fine rice at less than Tk 20 per maund from the previous week.

Due to rough weather prices of rice increased and it will go down very soon, he told the Minister.

When the Minister was passing through the rice market at New Market, Amena Begum, a day-labourer drew the attention of the Commerce Minister and said, “Sir, please bring down the prices of rice.”

Gul Mohammad, a butcher told Altaf that he was selling mutton at Tk 140 per kg and beef at Tk 100 per kg.

However, immediately after the visit of the Commerce Minister, the sellers started selling essentials at higher prices than the prices they quoted before him earlier.

Traders told The New Nation that it would take 45 more days for stability in vegetables prices to come in the markets.

New vegetables will arrive in the markets after one and a half months because farmers have just started to cultivate vegetables.

Earlier, the Prime Minister summoned the Commerce Minister at her office and reprimanded him for hike of essential items.

After visiting the New Market, the Commerce Minister told newsmen that open market sale (OMS) of rice would be started very soon.

“I hope that the market situation would calm down within a couple of days,” he said.
