Nigeria Needs 20 Million MT of Rice Annually
Bauchi State government has said for Nigeria to attain self-sufficiency in rice production, farmers have to grow over 20 million metric tones yearly.

The state Coordinator, Special Rice Production Programme, Mal. Kabiru Saleh, made the observation at the weekend shortly after returning from an international conference on rice production.

He noted that currently Nigeria Rice Production is put at 3 million metric tones while requirement for consumption is 5 million metric tones, stressing that the three tiers of government after realising this shortcoming, evolved measures to increase rice production across the country.

The coordinator said the World Rice Day was aimed at boosting rice production in the country so that Nigeria could achieve self-sufficiency in the year 2007.

Saleh added that the theme of this year's celebration was "Grow More Nigeria Rice and Eat More Nigerian Rice," explaining that government was more serious now than before to boost rice production in the country.

According to him, three countries have been selected in Africa to celebrate the occasion, saying the countries include Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone to sensitise farmers and the general populace towards boosting rice production in Africa.
